Cubs star Ben Zobrist’s clutch hit in Game 7 of the World Series on Tuesday sealed the fate of the Cleveland Indians — and Homewood Mayor Richard Hofeld.

With the Cubs’ victory, Hofeld, a lifelong White Sox fan, lost a bet with Village Manager Jim Marino, a devoted Cubs fan.

The result? Hofeld had to don a Cubs jersey Saturday, Nov. 5, during his weekly office hours in the lobby of Village Hall.

“This is going to be so sweet,” Marino said as he handed Hofeld the jersey.

“This is going to be painful,” Hofeld said.

Hofeld had to endure some good-natured ribbing while wearing the North Sider colors, but he took it with good grace.

“I give the Cubs all the credit,” he said. “They built a great team from their farm system and key trades. They did it right.”

If the Indians had prevailed, Marino would have had to wear a White Sox shirt.

“I had it all pressed for him,” Hofeld said.

Maybe next year.
