Two H-F High students selected National Merit semifinalists

Homewood-Flossmoor High School seniors Katie Donermeyer and Lillian Hamer have been selected semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program.

Homewood-Flossmoor High School seniors Katie Donermeyer and Lillian Hamer have been selected semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program.

They are now being considered for one of the 7,500 scholarships worth more than $33 million to be awarded in spring 2017 by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. It is expected about half of the 16,000 semifinalists across the country will receive scholarships.

Katie and Lillian were selected for this honor based on test scores on the PSAT/NMSQT taken in fall 2015. They now advance to the finalist round.

Katie, 17, is the daughter of John and Vida Donermeyer of Homewood. She is a graduate of James Hart School.

At H-F, she plays cello with the orchestra. She plays field hockey for H-F, and is a member of the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta, a mathematics honor society. She is planning to major in computer science.

Lillian, 17, is the daughter of Sonnie Birch and Lawrence Hamer of Homewood. She is a graduate of James Hart School.

At H-F, Lillian is a team member of Scholastic Bowl, a quiz game that tests students on various academic topics. She has been playing cello for eight years and is a member of the H-F orchestra. Lillian also is a member of Friends of the H-F Library. She is interested in pursuing a degree in history.

In addition, National Merit Commended Students at H-F are Michael Bonthron, Nathaniel Bouchie, Blessing Ibe and Thomas Simon of Homewood and Emma Brown and Henry Heligas of Flossmoor. These students placed among the top 5 percent of the 1.6 million students in the National Merit Scholarship Program.

The 2016 National Merit semi finalists from H-F each received finalist status. Margaret Colton is now a student at the University of Chicago and Heather Culbertson is a student at Evangel University.
