Flossmoor Public Library Director Megan Millen has accepted a similar position in Joliet and will be leaving the library at the end of October.
Millen will take over as executive director of the Joliet Public Library in November.
“It has been my great honor and pleasure to have served the citizens of Flossmoor for the past 14 years,” Millen said. “In that time, we have built a brand new 38,000 square foot library, modernized it with renovations and added more programs and services than I can remember.”
The library is likely to use an executive search firm in looking for a new director.
Millen was hired soon after Flossmoor passed a 2002 referendum to build an $8 million dollar facility. She said she’s ready for new challenges in a larger community.
Joliet, the fourth largest city in Illinois, has a 77,000-square-foot main library in the downtown area; it was designed in 1903 by legendary architect Daniel Burnham. There is also a branch library on the west side of town that is about the same size as the Flossmoor facility. In Joliet, Millen will be supervising a staff of 106, as compared 35 in Flossmoor.
“Flossmoor is a wonderful, vibrant community and as I embark on my new journey at Joliet Public Library I will carry its spirit with me,” she said.
Millen said she was proud of programs that she helped institute such as Movies in Our Parks, the Flossmoor farmers market and Winterfest.
“On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank Megan for 14 years of excellent administration at the Flossmoor Public Library,” said library board President Anne Rempe Thiros.
“From new construction at the beginning of her tenure to the recent update at the library, with many challenges along the way, Megan has provided strong leadership for the staff and has been instrumental in the implementation of new ideas and programs for our patrons.
“We wish Megan great success in her new position.”
