Family escapes unhurt, 2 Homewood firefighters suffer minor injuries in fire Thursday

Two Homewood firefighters suffered minor injuries, but residents escaped unharmed from a house fire Thursday morning in the 2400 block of Spruce Road.

Homewood Deputy Fire Chief Steve DeJong said the firefighters have returned to duty.

The family is being assisted by the local chapter of the Red Cross, he said.

Three members of the family were home at the time of the fire, but DeJong said a working smoke detector alerted them to the blaze, enabling them to escape without injury.

Damage to the home was extensive. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but foul play is not suspected, according to DeJong.

The fire call came in shortly after 10 a.m., and the blaze was under control in about 15 minutes.

Firefighters from Flossmoor, Glenwood, Hazel Crest, Country Club Hills and Thornton assisted with the incident.
