Homewood Disposal’s CNG fueling station to open in August

Homewood Disposal Service, Inc. will open the area’s first public compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling station early next month.

The Homewood Disposal energy station allows any vehicle that runs on compressed natural gas to easily refuel. The station’s location, at 1501 W. 175th St. in Homewood, is close to both Halsted Street and the Interstate 80 interchange.

A ribbon cutting ceremony at the CNG station is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 21.

Homewood Disposal began its commitment to cleaner fuel in 2012 when it first added CNG trucks to its fleet. For easy fleet fueling, Homewood Disposal installed a private CNG filling at its Park Forest location. Today, the company has more than 60 trucks running on CNG and is committed to continued CNG growth.

Some benefits of using Compressed Natural Gas fuel include:

  • It is colorless, odorless, non-toxic and emits nearly 90 percent fewer emissions than diesel.
  • CNG is domestically produced and readily available.
  • Natural gas vehicles can reduce noise by as much as 50 percent compared to diesel vehicles.
  • Natural gas prices are more stable than diesel and gas.
  • Natural gas vehicles are less likely to have a spill because the storage tanks are stronger.

Access to this public fueling station will make it easier for business and the public to switch over from diesel and gasoline.

With the opening of this public fueling station, Homewood Disposal becomes a key component in Chicago’s new energy framework. The transition to compressed natural gas vehicles creates a cleaner environment, quieter neighborhoods and independence from fluctuating fuel markets.
