Lou Malnati’s, one of the Chicago area’s best-known purveyors of deep dish pizza, may be coming to Flossmoor.
Company officials are seeking permission to open a carryout location at 3315 Vollmer Road, at the former Flavor restaurant site in Flossmoor Commons.
Scott Bugner, Flossmoor’s inspectional services administrator, said Wednesday that Malnati’s is asking for a special use permit that allows a carryout restaurant in a B-3 zoning district.
Malnati’s officials are scheduled to ask for the permit at the Flossmoor Plan Commission’s July 21 meeting. The commission and village board must approve the special use permit before Malnati’s can move ahead with their plans to renovate the space and open for business.
“While restaurants are a permitted use in the B-3 district, a carry-out only restaurant would require a special use permit,” Bugner said.
Malnati’s plans to completely renovate the space at Flossmoor Commons, he said.
The Malnati’s organization has already submitted building plans and requested plan review in advance of any decision by the board, Bugner said.
“They were unaware that there were restrictions on carryout restaurants until they made contact with the inspectional services department, so they had plans ready to go,” he said. “No building permit will be issued in advance of approval.”
Northbrook-based Lou Malnati’s currently has 45 locations, including 30 for carryout, 13 sit-down restaurants and two cafes. The first Malnati’s pizzeria was opened in 1971. The company is owned by the Malnati family.
