With just two weeks left before its grand opening, Flossmoor’s Meijer superstore is swarming with activity as workers get ready for customers at the complex, located at Crawford Avenue and Vollmer Road.

Joe Hirschmugl, Meijer’s public relations manager, said about 280 employees are preparing for opening day on Tuesday, June 21.

“Over the next few weeks, our teams will be stocking store shelves as well as going through training,” he said.

Hirschmugl explained there will be weekly sales at the supercenter and gas station when the doors officially open for business.

In addition, customers can also look forward to special promotions and giveaways commemorating the grand opening, he said. They will begin June 23.

The Meijer gas station opened on May 26.

The 200,000-square-foot facility will be open 24 hours a day seven days a week. It will offer a wide range of grocery and general merchandise including national brands, a full-service pharmacy, electronics and photo department and lawn/garden center.

Meijer will offer more than 600 types of fresh produce, a full-service deli and meat counter and fresh bread baked four times a day. There will be a Starbucks coffee outlet as well.

Corporate leaders from Meijer, based in Grand Rapids, Mich., and local dignitaries will mark the store’s first day of business with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. June 21.

Flossmoor Mayor Paul Braun said the development of the new Meijer center will provide maximum convenience for village residents as well as surrounding south suburban communities.

“Being able to have a prescription filled no matter what time of day or night provides additional convenience and safety for our residents, especially for those with children who may need a prescription filled in the middle of the night,” he said.

Braun said Meijer will provide substantial economic benefits to the village and its residents. He explained the additional property and sales tax revenues will be generated not only for Flossmoor, but also for Flossmoor School District 161, Homewood-Flossmoor School District 233, the Flossmoor Village Library and the Homewood-Flossmoor Park District.

Braun stressed Meijer is a great company that’s an excellent partner in the communities where it operates. Meijer is well-known for being involved in local community affairs and contributing to charitable causes.

“All in all, this will be a win-win result for Meijer, the Village of Flossmoor, Flossmoor residents and the surrounding communities,” Braun said.

The Flossmoor center is the latest of nine new stores Meijer is opening this year in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and Wisconsin.
