The opening of Homewood’s Outdoor Farmers Market on Memorial Day weekend brought many vendors and shoppers to its new location on Martin Square.

The market featured fresh produce, live music and even a few quick science projects provided by the Homewood Science Center’s Pop Up Science program.

Hunt and Gather market returned for its second year. The craft and repurpose market takes place during the last Saturday of the month at the farmers market.

The market also has hot food vendors such as EmpanadUS, The Cottage on Dixie and Cynthia’s Gumbo, a returning favorite.

“When Village Hall started to redefine this area next to La Banque Hotel we knew that this was the footprint we wanted for our new farmers market,” said, Alissa Opyd, village event coordinator.

The market stretches from Chestnut Road to Ridge Road, freeing up parking for visitors at the Harwood Avenue municipal lot beside Village Hall.

Kate Duff, market manager and vendor, said moving the market can stimulate is cross-promotion of Homewood businesses and village services. The market entrance at Ridge Road includes signs that direct visitors to businesses in the downtown area.

Duff said the market was so busy on opening day that she wasn’t able to get a count of patrons.

The market has been well received by patrons.

“I like it. It’s prettier,” said Antoinette Breen of Homewood. “I don’t know if there are more vendors or if it’s just a more convenient setup.”

Vendors have also given their approval of the space.

“I really like it. I feel like the turnout and the business been great.,” said Jennifer Elson of Stamper Cheese. “It feels comfortable and it seems like there are more vendors here this year.”

The Farmers Market takes place in Martin Square place from 8 a.m. to 1p.m. every Saturday until Oct. 8,
