H-F students meeting academic challenges through AP courses

A second robbery at the Southgate Minimart in Homewood ended Thursday with a car crash and the arrest of a suspect.

Homewood police said an employee at the store, located at 18747 Dixie Highway, followed the suspect after the robbery and contacted the police.

The male suspect, pursued by police, struck another vehicle at Flossmoor Road and Western Avenue. The driver of the second car and a single occupant in that vehicle were taken to a local hospital, police said.

The Southgate Minimart was also robbed on May 9. During that earlier incident, the robber displayed a handgun and demanded money from the cash drawer and also took cigarette lighters and Swisher Sweets cigars.

On Thursday, employees at the store said the robber returned to the scene of the crime. Once again, he displayed a handgun, demanded money and also took lighters and same brand of cigars, employees told the H-F Chronicle.

This time, the suspect was followed as he drove away in a Ford Taurus and police were alerted.

The robbery was reported at 1:12 p.m. Shortly after that, Homewood resident Margaret Brady said she was at Millennium Park and saw a dark-colored car speeding southbound on Harwood Avenue.

“Close behind, there were five police cars,” Brady said. “I think they were all Homewood police.” She said she believes the car being chased was going at least 65 mph.

Flossmoor police said the crash took place at 1:30 p.m.

Homewood police said the driver of the Ford Taurus is in custody and is a suspect in both robberies at Southgate Minimart. No other details were available from Homewood police. The investigation is ongoing, police said.

The traffic crash report is being handled by Flossmoor police.
