Homewood teacher John Calabrese remembered for energy, interest in kids

Colorful faces will highlight Walk, Stroll or Run for 161 on May 1 in Flossmoor.

The event, a fundraiser for Flossmoor School District 161, will feature a Color Dash – it’s for kids only – that lets youngsters run a course with brightly-colored faces. The Color Dash will be exactly 161 yards long, said Sharonda Williams of the school district’s PTO organization, the sponsor of the fundraiser.

Walk, Stroll or Run for 161 kicks off at 8:30 a.m. at Parker Junior High, 2810 School Street. Participants will follow a 2.98-mile route through the neighborhood just north of Parker. The Color Dash will take place on the Parker grounds.

Volunteers will tint children’s faces for the dash with a food coloring powder that easily washes off skin and out of clothes, Williams said. She is the PTO’s recording secretary and a member of its fundraising committee.

Money raised at the event will be used to purchase equipment and fund assemblies and other special programs throughout District 161, she said.

The PTO holds an annual fundraiser. This year the organization looked for an event that would maximize participation by students, parents and other community members, Williams said.

“We wanted something that would bring together all five of the District 161 schools,” she said.

Students who take part in the event are collecting pledges. Any student who collects more than $50 in pledges will be eligible to participate in a special party at Lions Pool on June 4.

Online early registration takes place through April 15 at www.walkstrollrunfor161.eventbrite.com. Early registration costs $30 for adults and $20 for children ages 5 to 17. Participants receive a t-shirt and bag. Persons who register early also have a chance to win four tickets and a parking pass for a White Sox game.

Prices after April 15 are $35 for adults and $25 for children. Entry forms are available on the websites for District 161 schools.

Children 4 and under can attend the event free of charge. Licensed, leased pets are also welcome.
