In March 2016, high winds toppled the community Christmas tree in Irwin Park.
Homewood-Flossmoor Park District officials determined the tree was not salvageable, so it was removed.
Within days, Homewood resident Carol Horeth offered her tree, a gift from Richard Irwin, to replace the holiday tree.
At the Holiday Lights festival Dec. 2, Horeth’s spruce tree will be lit for the first time as the new community Christmas tree.
