TALK to host spoken word concert on Saturday

The art of the spoken word will be on display Saturday from 4 to 9 p.m. at St. Paul Community Church on Dixie Highway in Homewood.

Theatre Arts Leadership Kouncil (TALK) will host “Spoken Effect,” a spoken word festival featuring poetry, short stories, dramatic readings, rap, and open mic offerings. There will be competitive and non-competitive aspects to the event, which is open to teens and adults.

“Like other events, teens are at the helm, with the assistance of an adult mentor, and so far we have over 20 applicants to read/perform their poetry or short stories,” said Steve Ploum, TALK adult coordinator. “This will be their first event where the teens invite adults to perform.”

Teens will do their scheduled performances during the first half of the event, he said.  The second half of the event is the teen competitive poetry slam, which will include cash prizes for first, second and third places.

Concessions will be available.

The event will take place in the St. Paul parking lot and lawn but will move into the church if necessary, depending on the weather.
