Portillo’s Hot Dogs opened its hiring office Tuesday, and hundreds of job seekers filled out applications the first day.

By mid-afternoon nearly 400 applicants had come through the doors at 17818 S. Halsted St. in Homewood, according to Nicole Quinn, Portillo’s executive recruiter. The office is located between GNC and Famouse Footwear.
“It’s been a great turnout so far,” Quinn said. “We weren’t sure what to expect.”
She said the office would remain open until near the opening of the company’s Homewood restaurant in mid-September. About 200 people will be hired to staff the new shop.
The restaurant is under construction at the intersection of Halsted and 175th streets.
As applicants are hired, they will begin training at the Homewood office before being assigned to other Portillo’s restaurants for further training, Quinn said.
The hiring office is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday each week. Applicants must be at least 16 years old. Wages begin at $9 per hour.
