Officers elected at annual League of Women Voters meeting

That old cell phone you put in the drawer can help underwrite services at South Suburban Family Shelter.

The agency is looking for individual phone donations or organizations willing to run an old phone collection drive. Phones will be sent to a recycler and the money will help fund South Suburban Family Shelter’s many programs for families affected by domestic violence.

“With the hundreds of thousands of used cell phones sitting idly in our community, the fundraising potential is limitless. Donating a used, unwanted cell phone allows community members to donate to a good cause without reaching into their wallets,” said Vicki Meilach, community outreach coordinator at the agency.

South Suburban Family Shelter will turn over collected phones to a company that either refurbishes the phones for wireless markets worldwide, or responsibly shreds the phones and collects parts for reuse.

A phone donation can be made at:

  • SSFS Administrative office, 18139 Harwood, Homewood
  • Bergstein’s NY Deli, 200 Dixie Highway, Chicago Heights
  • Jonathan Kane Salon, 2635 Flossmoor Rd., Flossmoor

All donations are tax-deductible and receipts are available at collection sites.
