The greenest volunteer day in the Homewood-Flossmoor community is coming this Saturday to area parks.

The Homewood-Flossmoor Park District’s 29th annual Park Pride Day is a community-wide volunteer clean-up that started in 1987 as an event to promote citizens taking pride in their local parks.

From 8:30 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 2, citizens will join with their neighbors, friends and local organizations at their neighborhood park to plant, weed, mulch, paint and pick up debris. The volunteer help saves the park district numerous man-hours in getting the parks ready for summer activities.

In return for their efforts — besides pride in their work — volunteers receive a complimentary T-shirt and are treated to a free barbecue lunch in Irwin Park beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Irwin Park is located at 18120 Highland Ave. in Homewood.

Local businesses support Park Pride Day through financial contributions that offset the cost of shirts, the luncheon and materials. Many businesses also get involved by providing volunteers from their work force. Sponsoring businesses this year include: Andrew McCann Lawn Sprinkler, Aurelio’s Pizza, Dairy Queen of Homewood, Dr. Pepper Chicago Division, Fox Vending, Helsel-Jepperson, Homewood Disposal Service, Monarch Auto Supply, Inc. and Walt’s Food Centers.

Even after two decades, Park Pride Day continues to be very popular and successful. Many local families look forward to this day, realizing the impact their efforts can have on their neighborhood park.

Want to get your family involved? Everyone — young and old alike — is welcome to join in the fun.
