Stu Mindeman

A rising star in the Chicago jazz scene will bring his music to an area church this weekend.

Stuart Mindeman, a Chicago-based pianist/keyboardist/composer recognized as a next generation jazz musician, will show how it’s done when he performs in a free concert at 6 p.m. on Sunday, April 26, at St. Mark Church, 312 N. Chicago Rd., Chicago Heights.

Joining him on stage will be fellow jazz musicians, as well as jazz vocalist Sarah Marie Young. The program will be a jazz festival, including Latin jazz and jazz with a touch of Gospel.

Mindeman is just 26, but he’s already making a statement in Chicago’s jazz community with his first recording, “In Your Waking Eyes.” Mindeman has taken the poems of Langston Hughes and set 11 of them to music. Young is the vocalist on the album.

Howard Reich of the Chicago Tribune recently wrote: “Mindeman’s music illuminates some of the meanings of Hughes’ art, both men articulating their thoughts in a thoroughly American language: jazz.”
