Applause for Tom Brabec as he ends 18 years on District 153 board

The Village of Flossmoor announced Wednesday that a groundbreaking ceremony for the long-awaited Meijer superstore will take place next Tuesday, April 28. The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. at the Meijer site, 3800 Vollmer Road.

Contractors for Meijer did substantial site work last year and will be working on construction of the 192,000 square foot main store this spring and summer. The structure is to be completed by the time cold weather arrives so that interior work can proceed over the winter and the store can open next spring.

The Meijer center will be built on the north side of Vollmer Road just east of Crawford Avenue. Besides the Meijer store, the construction plan also calls for buildings on two outlots, and a gas station. The development will wrap around the existing BP station. Two additional outlots will remain undeveloped as green space at the request of homeowners in the adjacent Ballantrae subdivision.

When completed, the Meijer store will be a 24-hour facility that will sell groceries and general merchandise and have a pharmacy and a garden center.
