A second court-appointed psychiatrist has found Pol Danilov not fit for trial following last October’s attack on an elderly woman in a Homewood grocery store. 

During Danilov’s latest appearance at the Markham courthouse on Monday, Cook County Associate Judge Michelle Pitman ordered a transfer of the case to the Criminal Courts Building in Chicago. A hearing on Danilov’s fitness for trial will be held Friday, March 20, in that building, located at 2650 S. California Ave.

Danilov has been examined by two court-appointed psychiatrists and both found him unfit for trial. After the latest examination was introduced in court Monday, Assistant Cook County State’s Attorney Virginia Bigane asked for a hearing on Danilov’s fitness to stand trial. Pitman ordered the hearing but said that it needs to be conducted at he Criminal Courts Building.

Angela Kilpatrick, Danilov’s public defender, said she would not appear at the hearing in Chicago and that another attorney for Danilov needs to be appointed once the case is transferred to the Criminal Courts Building.

Danilov, 26, of the 18400 block of Harwood Avenue in Homewood, was charged with attempted murder and a hate crime following the Oct. 10 attack at Walt’s, 2345 183rd St., in which he allegedly stabbed a 79-year-old woman. It is believed the attack was unprovoked.

According to published reports, prosecutors said the hate crime charge was brought against Danilov because he admitted he stabbed the victim because she is African-American. He is being held at Cook County Jail with a bail of $500,000.
