Flossmoor police report 30 percent crime rate drop in 2014

The H-F Chess Team participated in the State Chess Tournament in Springfield Feb. 13-14, and according to Coach Dwight Morton, the young team did well, coming away with a 3-4 record.

“The H-F Chess Team had a good showing at the State Chess Tournament despite coming one win short of our goal,” Morton said.

The team was placed at 60th seed out of more than 140 schools, which meant they played a higher seeded team than expected in the first round, according to Morton. H-F lost to Jefferson H.S. which was seeded at 24th.

Morton said the team is looking ahead to next year and hopes to continue making progress.

“In true H-F Viking Spirit, we’ve already begun planning for the 2015-16 season, in which most of the team will be sophomores or juniors that now have meaningful experience playing higher seeded teams at IHSA’s State Chess Tournament,” he said.

Morton said he’s not only excited about the potential of his returning players but plans to work with feeder schools to help groom future team members.

Highlights of the tournament, according to Morton:

  • Troi Bowie ranked 29th out of 146 players — the top 20 percent of Board 2 players.
  • Matthew Scholefield ranked 36th out of 146 players — the top 20 percent of Board 3 Players.
  • Jacob Rothchild won three games at Board 1 compared to zero wins last year from Board 1.
  • Kaleb Monroe made a meaningful contribution as an alternate by wining his game.

Morton thanked the H-F administration and school board for leadership and support and “for inspiring us to always persevere in pursuing excellence in all we do.”
