A Dolton man was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and resisting a peace officer after he allegedly discarded a weapon and attempted to flee during a traffic stop shortly before 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24.

Xavier J. Harding, 19, of the 15600 block of Ingleside, was a passenger in a vehicle that was stopped by Homewood police in the 18300 block of Dixie Highway after the officer noticed the driver was not wearing a safety belt.

While the officer was speaking with the driver, Harding allegedly exited the vehicle and fled on foot westbound. The officer pursued him and observed him throw an object into the back yard of a Martin Avenue residence, according to the report. Harding then stopped and was arrested. A semi-automatic handgun was recovered.

Police said the Jasper County, Ind., sheriff’s office reported that the handgun was stolen.
