A world of white, and neighbors clearing the way

When conditions are just right — cold but not too cold, with just enough moisture — the snowpeople come out to play.

The creatures proliferated in the area Sunday and Monday after Sunday’s foot and a half of snow created excellent snowperson-making conditions. And in one Homewood neighborhood, they even competed for the honor of being named the Best Snowperson.

Nona Ridel, of the 18500 block of Page Avenue, said on Monday when she and her family finished shoveling, they decided to make a snowman. They ended up making a snow couple.
Then neighbor Ginny Donahue came by.

“It was totally spontaneous,” Ridel said. “Ginny said, ‘We should have a contest.'”

Donahue spread the word around the neighborhood. A deadline of 2 p.m. was set. Then the neighborhood went to work, er, play.

Ridel took photos of the resulting creations and posted them on a neighborhood Facebook page. The snowpeople with the most “likes” won.

A snowboarding snowperson took first place, and a little snowperson by little Charlotte, 3, took second, Ridel said.

Although she had a hand in getting things started, Ridel credited Donahue for organizing the contest.

“She gets things going here,” Ridel said. “She’s our cruise director.”

Page Avenue is also known locally for its creative Halloween decorations.

“This is an awesome street,” Ridel said.
