Police Reports: Dec. 22, 2014

Students at Homewood-Floosmoor High School will give you a glimpse on Saturday of what they’ll experience this spring when the H-F Orchestra tours Spain for nine days.

H-F students will be presenting an evening with Spanish flare at the “Mid-Winter’s Fiesta” on Jan. 17, as part of the orchestra’s fundraiser for its upcoming trip to Spain.

The auction event opens at 6 p.m. in the school cafeteria at 999 Kedzie Ave. in Flossmoor. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door.

There will be something for everyone to enjoy — from the traditional tapas portions of paella, empanadas and frittatas, to auction prizes for every budget.

Student musicians and special guest performers will entertain throughout the evening.

Among the items up for auction this year are four park hopper passes to Disney World, a handmade quilt celebrating this year’s tour, a vintage stained glass table lamp and a private 30-minute performance by two Chicago Lyric Opera performers. All proceeds from the event will go toward financing the tour to Spain.

Since 1970, an H-F student music group has made an international trip. This year the 50-member orchestra, under the direction of B.J. Engrav, will be traveling March 26 through April 3 performing in Barcelona, Madrid and Zaragoza. When the students are not rehearsing or performing, they will explore museums, monuments, historical sites, markets and local neighborhoods.

The orchestra’s last trip was a tour of Brazil in 2012.

“H-F music students have performed in over 80 cities in 28 countries on five continents since the tours began in 1970,” says fundraising co-chair Sharon Bouchie. “HF is the only high school in Illinois that we know of with such a record of international performances.”

The tour is sponsored by the Homewood-Flossmoor Fine and Performing Arts Council (HFFPAC), an independent organization to support local youth music programs, and H-F Orchestra Parents United in Service, a volunteer organization dedicated to supporting the H-F High School orchestra program.
