Then and now: Homewood State Bank/La Banque

Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra will begin its 2015 concerts at 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, with what IPO officials call “a powerful program with international flair.”

Maestro David Danzmayr and the orchestra open the evening with Gabriela Frank’s “Elegía Andina,” a Peruvian-inspired elegy to the South American Andes written in honor of Frank’s older brother, according to a news release from IPO.

Frank, a composer with multi-ethnic roots, has traveled extensively in South America, collecting local poetry, folklore and folk music whose themes she incorporates into her music.

Hristova, a 2013 Avery Fisher Career Grant winner and acclaimed international violinist, is known for her powerful and passionate playing, and her treatment of the Brahms Concerto will be a delight for classical music lovers.

Following intermission, Danzmayr will lead the orchestra in Elgar’s “Enigma Variations.” These individual musical portraits join together to paint a mysterious and playful picture of the composer’s friends and family. What started out as the result of an evening’s exercise in musical improvisation transformed into one of Elgar’s most notable works and raised the status of British music at the turn of the 20th century.
