Christopher Mason Riedel, Brian Mayo and Isabel Weber will audition the afternoon of Jan. 29, the first day of the convention in Peoria, and learn that evening if they will perform with the All-State Concert Band or the Honors Band. They will perform on Jan. 31, the final day of the meeting.

More than 20,000 students across Illinois auditioned for one of 1,332 slots. H-F Band Director Sarah Whitlock said seven H-F students qualified, but because the finalists are limited to juniors and seniors only Riedel, Mayo and Weber were selected.

“H-F’s student qualifier numbers are going up each year. I’m pretty excited by that,” Whitlock said.

In addition, H-F student Annie Reilly was selected for the convention’s All-State Future Music Educators Seminar.

Mason, the son of Nona and Christopher Riedel of Homewood, first took up the bass trombone as a sixth grader at Millennium School. He now performs with the H-F Symphonic Band.

Brian, the son of Cindy and Brian Mayo Sr. of Homewood, has played the trombone since he was in fourth grade at Trinity Lutheran School in Tinley Park. Brian is the section leader for both the H-F Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble.

Isabel, the daughter of Stephanie and Dr. Daniel Weber of Flossmoor, has played the clarinet since fifth grade at Western Avenue School. She is the section leader for the H-F Symphonic Band.
