The community came together to cheer on the Homewood-Flossmoor High School football team as they battled for the Class 8A championship title Saturday night at the University of Illinois’ Memorial Stadium.
Alumni from multiple generations wore red and showed their Viking pride at parties hosted at Homewood and Flossmoor businesses.

“I put out an email, and asked my friends to come out, and they did,” said Deborah Dennison, who was surrounded by close friends as they watched the game at Wiley’s Restaurant at Coyote Run Golf Course.
She and her husband, David, a 1970 graduate, said their support for the team comes with a sense of pride. Their four children graduated from H-F.
The same sentiment was repeated by the Tozer family, who helped carry on the H-F sporting tradition. Tom is a 1977 graduate and his wife, Lori, is a 1978 graduate. They both played on the golf team. Daughter Emily, class of 2009, was on the swim team, and Katie, class of 2011, played soccer. Their youngest daughter Sarah, who will graduate in May, was at the game supporting her boyfriend, Brian Mayo, one of three drum majors for H-F.
Flossmoor residents Barbara Teresko Karstrom, a 1983 graduate, and Maria Pasquinelli, class of 1978, said they still have Viking pride and were happy to come out in support of the kids they know who are on the team.
Past H-F football players Tom McCallum and Eric Havens, both class of 1986, have maintained their friendship for nearly 30 years. Their viewing party included H-F supporters from Naperville, Barrington and Indiana.
Havens said 20 years ago, he and his teammates were in Bloomington supporting H-F when the football team won its first and only state football championship.
Ann Cherry, director of alumni relations and development at H-F, was excited to see a lively crowd at Wiley’s. She was giving away H-F blankets and other items for each H-F touchdown.
“I was hoping to give out a few more,” she said, as the score told the story.
The home team gave it their all but came in second at the hands of Stevenson High School. The final score was 31-25.
