to the district.

The District 153 Board of Education honored Cherylyn Pesina with the Morin Award for Excellence at its Nov. 17 board meeting.

Pesina is instructional technology coordinator and director of the Media Center for Millennium and James Hart Schools. She started with District 153 staff five years ago as a fifth grade teacher.

Millennium School Principal Shirley Watkins lauded Pesina for her work with students and parents. When the Media Center position opened two years ago, Watkins said Pesina was the first person she thought of for the job.

The board recognized Pesina for her initiative, problem solving abilities, mentorship of fellow staff members and collaboration with staff in developing projects that provide students with new techniques for learning.

Pesina said she was surprised to receive the honor and thanked the district saying she loves her job and all her colleagues who help make efforts worthwhile.

Pesina’s latest project is organizing students into a Student Technology Assistance Team to help fellow students and faculty members with their computer questions. She is working with STAT members to promote the Hour of Code program at Millennium and Hart the week of Dec. 8.

The Hour of Code program will promote computer science by showing students how easy it can be to develop computer code.

The next meeting of the District 153 school board will be at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8, in the James Hart Media Center, 18220 Morgan St. The meeting will begin with a tax levy public hearing.
