Gypsy jazz concert kicks off new music series at Ravisloe

The weather has turned prematurely cold, but the music in Homewood this week will be hot.

LePercolateur will bring to Homewood a performance of the music made famous in the 1930s at the Hot Club de France, gypsy jazz.

The concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, at Ravisloe Country Club is the first in a series of Thursday Thaw shows intended to “warm the soul and spirit,” thoughout the winter months and beyond, according to a post on the Chicago Jazz Magazine website.

The French gypsy jazz ensemble is led by composer/bassist Stacy McMichael and features vocalist Candace Washburn, Marielle de Rocca-Serra on violin, and Jason Miller and Chris Seibold on guitars. 

LePercolateur takes concert-goers “to a time where music was a liberating and cathartic respite from persecution.”

The group has performed as part of the Jazz Institute of Chicago’s 2011 and 2012 Jazz Tours, at Andy’s Jazz Club, Hard Rock Cafe Chicago, 2013 All Souls Jazz Festival, City Winery, the Mayne Stage, Jazz Showcase, Martyrs, Schubas, the 2012 Deer Park Jazz Festival, the 2010 and 2011 Chicago Cultural Center’s “Music Without Borders” series.

Thursday Thaw series
The series is produced by True Muse Productions and is directed by Linda Solotaire. Sponsors include StepNorth Media and Chicago Jazz Magazine, in collaboration with Ravisloe Country Club and the Village of Homewood. It will include events about once a month November through April, then every other week through August. 

All performances are open to the public and appropriate for all ages. 

Holiday of the Holidays
Thursday Thaw will continue Thursday, Dec. 4, with a performance by Robin Watson. Her “Holiday of the Holidays” show is a tribute to jazz great Billie Holiday.

“I don’t intend to mimic Billie, for no one can truly do that, but I do hope to relay the passion, pain and healing she imparted when she sang,” Watson said.

The Robin Watson Combo includes David Turner on piano, Rolfe Hokanson on bass and drummer George Aparo.

Holiday Jazz Duets
Next will be a Wednesday evening show, Dec. 10: Holiday Jazz Duets with Linda Solotaire and  Saalik, featuring Leandro Lopez-Varady on Piano. The show will feature songs from the great American songbook along with some favorite Christmas melodies, including “Santa Baby,”  “Baby its Cold Outside,” “White Christmas” and more.

Latin jazz in January
Thursday, Jan. 22 at 7:30 p.m. Sueños, a Latin jazz quintet “will roll into Ravisloe like a soft warm South American wave,” according to the Chicago Jazz Magazine article. The ensemble is comprised Leandro Lopez-Varady on piano, Michael Levin on reeds, leader/composer/arranger Steven Hashimoto on bass, percussionist Joe Rendon and Heath Chappell on drums. 

Their music combines the rhythms and traditions from Cuba, Brasil, Spain, Mexico, South and Central America and the Caribbean with the improvisational philosophy of jazz. They have performed widely in the greater Chicagoland area, including The Green Mill, Andy’s, Fitzgerald’s, Siam Marina Restaurant, Bossa Nova and The Shark Bar.

Beautiful Love in February
Brazilian singer/songwriter/guitarist Paulinho Garcia plays his intimate Beautiful Love show Thursday, Feb. 12.

Ravisloe Country Club is located at 18231 Park Avenue in Homewood. All shows are at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 online in advance or $25 a the door. Tickets are available at the box office on the night of the performance and also online.


True Muse Productions is a not-for-profit arts organization whose mission is to promote live performance, in particular under-exposed music genres. The organization produces music series, teaches music and supports music education, holding workshops for artists working in all media, and subsidizes marketing and PR services for independent artists.
