Police Reports: Dec. 25, 2014

Tom Kataras

At the end of open session Tuesday, Sept. 9, long-time Homewood Trustee Tom Kataras announced his retirement from the board.

The retired businessman has served a total of about 10 years on the board, and he thanks board members and village staff for their service to the community. But he said other interests were making it increasingly difficult to fulfill his obligations as a trustee.

What really enabled the decision, he said, was finding a capable person to serve the rest of his term, which ends in April. He recommended Village Clerk Karen Washington be appointed to his post.

In other business, the board arrived at a compromise on the amusement tax rate with Brunswick Zone XL, the business most affected by the new tax. Representatives of the bowling alley asked that the tax be rescinded, but trustees agreed to reduce it from 5 percent to 2 percent and directed staff to prepare an ordinance to that effect.

Board members and residents at the meeting got their first glimpse of the 15th Richard Haas mural to be installed on the south wall of Mama and Me Pizzeria, 18219 Dixie Highway.

Haas and painter Thomas Melvin were on hand to present the new design, which will portray the tradition of Homewood’s Fourth of July parade.

Melvin said he hopes to begin work on the mural Sept. 22 if all goes well.

The board awarded the Willow Road/Marshfield sanitary sewer replacement project to low bidder Alsterda Construction Company of Alsip. The other bid was for just more than $170,000.

In the omnibus vote, the board approved a resolution recognizing Jack Lenox for 20 years of service to the Homewood Police Department, designated Finance Director Dennis Bubenik and Senior Accountant Amy Zukowski as authorized parties regarding a lease for two Ford Explorers and approved the sale of surplus property.

All trustees were present. The next board meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, in Village Hall, 2020 Chestnut Road.
