Uptick in District 153 kindergarten class may be an anomaly

There are more little kindergarteners in Homewood District 153 this year than there has been since 2001.
The 25 percent increase in the class size, from an average of 160 to today's 195 students, forced the district to add an additional kindergarten class at Willow School, where children pre-school through second grade are served.
Now administrators are trying to figure out if the increase is a trend or a fluke? 

District 153 has a long-range plan for the next five years

The board of education for Homewood District 153 officially accepted a five-year strategic plan at its March 12 meeting.
Superintendent Dale Mitchell offered his thanks and congratulations to the board members, district staff and community volunteers who worked on the outline and spelled out initiatives to be carried out through 2023. More than 50 people were involved in developing the plan.

Snow day adds to school year as boards approve 2018-19 calendars

That snow day schools took Feb. 9 will extend this school year by a day.
Homewood District 153 and Flossmoor District 161 will count June 7 as a make-up day. Homewood-Flossmoor High School information was not available. Schools add an extra five days to their calendars at the end of the school year in the event of emergency closings, such as the snow day.

Rotarian Rick Thiernau shares message of caring with D153 students

Homewood District 153 found a way to say “thanks” and recognize Rick Thiernau, a dedicated volunteer who has given years of service. In fall, the district’s nomination to the Illinois State Board of Education for Thiernau was accepted and he received a “Those Who Excel” award as a community volunteer. He was one of only seven people recognized across the state.

Back to paper and pencil for District 153 PARCC test takers

Student testing time for the state mandated PARCC test has been reduced from four weeks to just one week because Homewood District 153 is now able to give the test with paper and pencil.
Kathy Schaeflein, director of curriculum and instruction, said the district applied for a waiver so that the test no longer has to be administered by computer. 

Homewood schools set tax levy at $14.4 million

Homewood School District 153 approved its 2017 tax levy of $14.4 million at the Dec. 11 board of education meeting.
The district expects to collect an additional $400,000 over last year’s receipts.  It is holding the increase within the required tax cap limitations. The amount stays within the 2.1 percent Consumer Price Index limit and allows for some new property that will be on the tax rolls, said John Gibson, the chief school finance officer.

School District 153 expects substantial benefit from Homewood home rule

If Homewood voters approve a home rule referendum March 20, it will have a special benefit for Homewood School District 153.
The school board on Dec. 11 approved an intergovernmental agreement with the village and gave its approval to a resolution outlining the benefits from the proposed sales tax hike.
