Homewood District 153 says no thanks to guns in schools proposals

Student safety is important, but Homewood District 153 board members voted unanimously not to support measures to allow staff to carry firearms in schools.
Although no school district would be compelled to develop programs that allow firearms on campus, Homewood’s board members wanted to share their positions with delegates of the Illinois Association of School Boards.

Homewood students meeting expectations on standardized reading, math tests

Homewood District 153’s fourth graders have shown consistent progress on standardized reading and math tests that officials say coincides with recent curriculum changes, and students’ scores overall show they are meeting expectations in these core subjects.
Midwest Analytics and Education LLC consultants shared STAR (Standardized Testing and Reporting) assessment data with the school board Tuesday, Oct. 16.

Four District 153 staff honored with Morin Award

The Jerry Morin Educational Excellence Award was presented to four outstanding Homewood District 153 staff members at the Sept. 24 school board meeting.
The Morin Award is given in honor of former school board member Jerry Morin, who always had a future vision and made certain the district’s plans looked into future needs that would keep the district at the cutting edge of technology in the classroom, said Board President Shelly Marks.

Three D153 students earn the Dockweiler Award for their efforts

Outstanding effort by three students in Homewood District 153 won them top honors Monday, Sept. 24, as each was presented the Tom Dockweiler Award.
Tom Dockweiler, for whom the award is named, retired from the board after 20 years of service. During his tenure he said it was always his desire to “raise the bar” to move the district forward.
