District 153 delivers special send-off for retiring superintendent

District 153 Superintendent Dale Mitchell got a heartfelt send-off from staff and friends at a reception in his honor on May 10. Mitchell is retiring in June after 27 years with the district, 18 of those as superintendent. Among the gifts he received was the school board's dedication of the administrative offices in his name, and the Homewood Education Association planting a tree on campus in his honor.


District 153 approves device fee for next year

The Homewood District 153 school board approved a $25 device fee and a $20 device insurance fee as part of the district’s student fees for the coming year. 

This year the district provided every student with a laptop computer, a case and after-hours technical support allowing each student to be connected to district services, according to Beth White, director of technology services.

Homewood schools target Feb. 16 for opening hybrid classes

The District 153 school board will conduct a special meeting on Monday, Feb. 1, to determine if schools can open Feb. 16 for hybrid learning.

The district has set out “checkpoints” for every two weeks. It missed the Jan. 7 target, so classes continued remotely. In a Tuesday, Jan. 19, checkpoint assessment, the numbers had administrators agree to continue the remote schedule.

No return to District 153 schools this month

The high rate of COVID-19 infections for the Homewood-Flossmoor area will keep students from returning to Homewood schools. 

Administrators notified parents on Wednesday that COVID statistics are too high to justify a return to Willow, Churchill and James Hart Schools on Jan. 21. Classes will continue remotely.

The district’s next assessment will be on Jan. 19. If the metrics improve by then, schools will reopen on Feb. 1.

The District 153 school board approved a return-to-school plan that would have a limited number of students back in their classrooms in Willow, Churchill and James Hart Schools, provided COVID-19 numbers are within an acceptable range.

Fewer than half of the parents responding to a district survey said they wanted their children to return to school in January. Administrators believe the staff can successfully teach to both in-person and remote learners.

District 153 to outline plans Monday for return to schools

Homewood District 153 board members on Monday will review a plan for students to return to Willow, Churchill and James Hart Schools for second semester work.

“We’re being encouraged by the state superintendent (of schools) and the governor’s office” to return to school," Superintendent Dale Mitchell said. “We felt we needed to have a plan ready to go.”
