While people adjust to working from home, I’ve been at it for a while. As a freelancer, I spend hours at the computer in my home office, working while drinking too much coffee and taking breaks to look out the window.

My office window faces a busy road in Homewood, and I enjoy watching people walk by—students, commuters and neighbors going between their day’s destinations.

Lately, that’s all changed. I don’t see the work warriors or students with stuffed backpacks. It’s a different crowd now.

The best tool for surviving times of trouble and disruption? Empathy
