"They just laughed.” That’s the reaction Donna Anfield of Homewood said she received when she proposed letting girls play ball in the Homewood youth leagues. That was in 1969. She persisted, though, and eventually the organization’s leaders relented, providing some equipment and letting girls use the fields during the day, when no boys’ games were scheduled.
