Greenspace group to host candidate forum Saturday

The South Suburbs for Greenspace Over Concrete will host a candidates forum on Saturday, March 6.

The group formed recently to oppose the redevelopment of the former Calumet Country Club as a warehousing/fulfillment operation. The group has organized frequent demonstrations at Homewood village hall in recent weeks and has attended Planning and Zoning Commission meetings to question the developer’s plans.

On Thursday, March 4, the commission voted not to recommend the rezoning request to Homewood trustees, who will consider the matter at their Tuesday, March 9, meeting.

According to a news release from SSGOC, the forum will give candidates for local government positions an opportunity to voice their opposition to the development.

The slate of speakers include Marcia Hollis-Bratcher, who is running for mayor of Hazel Crest; Gary Daggett, who is running for trustee of Flossmoor; Octavia Altheimer, who is a candidate for supervisor of Bloom Township; Michelle Nelson, who is running for mayor of Flossmoor; and possibly others.

The forum will begin at 1:30 p.m. on the outdoor patio of La Voute Bar + Bistro, 2034 Ridge Road in Homewood.
