State health officials announce smaller jump in COVID-19 cases last week

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) reported on Friday that 24,682 new confirmed and probable cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Illinois were recorded over the past week.

While cases are still going up, the rate seems to be slowing. Last week’s number was an increase of 3,348 over the previous week. In the first week of August the cases increased by 5,060. During the second week, the increase was 4,592.

Since July 30, Homewood has recorded 71 new cases, and Flossmoor added 52. That’s roughly triple the number for the month of July in each village.
 
An addition 126 people died from complications of the disease during the period since Friday, Aug. 13. The number of deaths increased in recent weeks by 25, 28 and now 34, indicating the rate continues to rise. That’s been a common trend throughout the pandemic, as death rates generally lag a few weeks behind case trends.

More than 77% of Illinois adults have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose and more than 60% of Illinois adults are fully vaccinated, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 

In Cook County, 57.86% of the population has been fully vaccinated. Flossmoor exceeds that, with 60%, but Homewood is falls slightly short, with 55.4%.

Since the pandemic began in 2020, IDPH has reported a total of 1,482,369 cases, including 23,717 deaths

As of Thursday night, 2,000 people were reported to be in the hospital with COVID-19.  Of those, 468 patients were in intensive care units and 234 patients were on ventilators. 

The preliminary seven-day statewide positivity for cases as a percent of total test from for the week was 5.3%.

A total of 13,745,822 vaccines have been administered in Illinois as of midnight Thursday.  The seven-day rolling average of vaccines administered daily is 33,564 doses. A total of 234,949 doses were reported administered in Illinois during the week.
