Eight residents considered for open District 233 board seat

Eight persons have filed resumes and letters requesting they be considered for a vacant seat on the District 233 school board serving Homewood-Flossmoor High School. The deadline for filing applications was Friday, Sept. 7.

Board member Tim Wenckus submitted a letter of resignation Aug. 24, effective immediately. Wenckus had eight months left on his term. He would have been up for re-election to a four-year term in April 2019.

Board President Steve Anderson said the school board will meet Sept. 24 and 25 to review the applicants and select a finalist for the position. The board has 45 days to fill the slot. If the six members can not come to an agreement, the Illinois Schools Superintendent’s Office will appoint someone.

The new board member will be sworn in at a special board meeting.

The person may be a placeholder serving the remaining term, or may seek a full term on the school board. There are four seats open in the April election, including Wenckus’s. The three incumbents up for re-election are Debbie Berman, John Farrell and Jody Scariano.

Wenckus also served as vice president and secretary of the board. It is expected Anderson will make a new appointment for those offices.
