Homewood to host ice cream social to celebrate 125th anniversary

Homewood’s year-long celebration of its 125th anniversary will include a special ice cream social from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 22, in front of the historic Gottschalk House, 18101 Martin Ave.

The event will feature ragtime music by King Music, and patrons can try their hand at traditional outdoor games of the time.

Brownies, a dessert that made its first appearance in 1893, will be served in addition to ice cream and toppings.

In addition to food, music and games, Homewood is hosting a beard and mustache contest with prizes given for the longest and most inventive style for each. Potential contestants have been working on their bristles since the village announced the contest several months earlier via social media, which village officials admit was not the method of communication in the 1890s.

Historic photos of Homewood will be on display as well.

“We have been celebrating Homewood’s rich history all year long at all of our events,” Homewood Mayor Richard Hofeld said. “This ice cream social gives the community another reason to gather and honor our past while looking forward to a bright future. I wanted to throw my hat in the ring for the beard growing contest but that didn’t go over so well at home.”
