Dozens of local non-profit organizations and community groups are hosting projects on the holiday Monday marking Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday.

In addition, “Pursuing the Dream,” an event celebrating black history and encouraging unity, will take place at 7 p.m. Jan. 16 at Homewood-Flossmoor High School’s Mall Auditorium. “Pursuing the Dream” is sponsored by H-F’s Multicultural Club as part of this year’s MLK Day of Service Events.

Interested persons can volunteer or host a service project at the Flossmoor village website, www.flossmoor.org.

Laura Brennan-Levy, Flossmoor’s program and event coordinator, said volunteer slots for nearly 400 people are being filled.

Jack and Jill of America, South Suburban Chicago Chapter, is sponsoring a food drive for Respond Now at Flossmoor Village Hall from 2 to 4 p.m. Brennan-Levy said more than 50 volunteers will be taking part in the food drive, which involves the collection of non-perishable items and loading them into a truck for Respond Now.

Jack and Jill SSCC and the Multicultural Club are new Day of Service sponsors this year “and are leading whole important components of the event,” Brennan-Levy said.

Other activities will include:
  • Clearing buckthorn and other invasive species from 2 to 4 p.m. at Iron Oaks Environmental Learning Center. It is sponsored by the Irons Oaks Foundation.
  • Creating “warming hearts and toes bag” for patients in nursing facilities. Sponsored by JourneyCare Kids Who Care,” it will take place at the H-F Racquet and Fitness Club from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • A crayon and marker recycling program at the Homewood Science Center from 2 to 3:30 p.m. It will be hosted by Girl Scout Troop 65149 for SCARCE, an environmental group.

Brennan-Levy said volunteer projects are also being added for Brookdale Senior Living, the Forest Preserve of Cook County, PADS, the Flossmoor Seed Library and Flossmoor Service League.
