The seven-member District 233 school board has a vacancy following the Aug. 24 resignation of board member Tim Wenckus who stepped down due to new work obligations.
Persons interested in filling his seat on the board have until Sept. 7 to apply. The new board member will serve until the April 2, 2019, election. Wenckus would have been up for re-election for another four-year term.
Wenckus, of Homewood, was first elected to the board in 2013. In his letter, he states:
“I have had some positive changes occur in my working career that have made it necessary for me to focus even more of my attention and effort there. Therefore, I will be immediately leaving my positions as vice president/secretary, and board member of the Homewood-Flossmoor School District 233 Board of Education.
“I would like to thank everyone who has supported me over my time with the H-F Board of Education since 2013. I will never forget the many friendships made while serving our community. My strong hope is that H-F will continue to move forward in a ‘students-first’ and fiduciarily responsible way.”
Wenckus had served on the Finance Committee during his five years on the board. In June he was named committee chairman.
He had chaired his first meeting this month leading a discussion on the proposal to build a new fine arts wing for the high school. He postponed action on a committee vote on whether to recommend the project saying he needed more information for newly appointed Finance Committee member Beth Larocca and himself. He was to have given Superintendent Von Mansfield a list by Aug. 24 of documents for their review.
The other member of the Finance Committee is Jody Scariano who had been serving as the chairperson before Steve Anderson, board president, removed her as chair. Anderson removed himself from the committee and appointed Larocca in his place.
In the Finance Committee’s original makeup, Wenckus and Anderson twice voted against the fine arts expansion and Scariano twice voted for it.

The school board’s next scheduled meeting is Sept. 17.
