The District 233 school board awarded tenure to nine Homewood-Flossmoor High School teachers at its meeting Tuesday, April 3.

Teachers are considered for tenure during their fourth year of full-time employment with the district. A letter to each honoree states that tenure “means to the students and parents of the district that your total impact on your students and colleagues has been carefully appraised and that you have (the board’s) complete endorsement as a permanent member of this faculty.”

Teachers who, with the start of the 2018-19 contact, will be tenured are:
  • Christina Clark, Applied Academics
  • Courtney Pesha, Applied Academics
  • Kristine Weidenhoefer, Fine Arts
  • Eric Olson, Physical Education
  • Kevin Galich, Science
  • Gil Smit, Social Science
  • Sheila Acebes, World Language
  • Ashley Mazzola, World Language
  • Sara Brown, World Language
In addition, the board notified eight teachers that they were advanced from third to fourth year probation. They will be considered for tenure the following year. The board also notified 13 teachers that they successfully completed their second year with the district and advanced to third year probation, and 11 teachers that they successfully completed their first year on tenure track and advance to a second year of probation.

The board also released several teachers who were part-time or whose evaluations didn’t warrant their employment another year.

In other business, approval was given for administrators to include several dozen courses with low enrollments on the schedule for next year. Students have pre-registered for next year, and administrators presented the board with a list of courses with 14 or fewer students. These courses must be approved by the board.

Many of the courses will be doubled up in one classroom, said Principal Jerry Anderson. For example, Photo 2-college prep with eight students will be combined with Photo 2-honors.
