Legislature working on reimbursements for South Suburban Family Shelter

Homewood-based South Suburban Family Shelter (SSFS), an agency assisting domestic violence victims, may soon get reimbursements owed by the State of Illinois.

The Illinois House of Representatives approved legislation that would pay SSFS for services it has provided to clients over the past year. Co-sponsors of the legislation are Reps. Will Davis (D-Homewood), Al Riley (D-Hazel Crest) and Anthony DeLuca (D-Chicago Heights).

The bill is now in the Illinois Senate.

Domestic violence agencies were inadvertently omitted from the state’s stopgap funding bill in June 2016, but have continued to offer services despite the lack of reimbursement.

The legislation has broad, bi-partisan support and backers hope it will pass by May 31, the legislature’s deadline.

South Suburban Family Shelter has continued to provide services to families who experience domestic violence, including: a 24-hour crisis hotline, emergency shelter, counseling for adult victims and their children, court advocacy, medical advocacy, prevention program, professional trainings, partner abuse intervention program, and more.
