H-F police departments invite community to National Night Out events on Tuesday

Homewood and Flossmoor police departments will be hosting National Night Out events from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 1. The annual event is a nationwide effort to provide an opportunity for residents to get to know their law enforcement officers and other emergency responders — and to get to know each other.

The Flossmoor event will be held in the village hall east parking lot and will include games and emergency vehicle displays and other opportunities for residents to learn about police services and community programs.

Deputy Police Chief Tod Kamleiter said the event will include an interactive emergency vehicle display, free hot dogs, games for children, station tours, a Chicago police helicopter flyover, crime scene processing demonstrations and more.

It’s the first year Flossmoor has held such a National Night Out event, Kamleiter said. The village hall is located at 2800 Flossmoor Road.

The Homewood event will be held at Irwin Park in the 1800 block of Ridge Road.
The schedule:
  • An emergency helicopter will be on display from 5 to 6 p.m. Because the crew could be required to go on calls, the time is approximate.
  • James Hart Summer Choir will sing the National Anthem at 5:30 p.m. at the gazebo.
  • CN Railway’s Little Obie trackless train will take families around Irwin Park from 5 to  6 p.m.
  • Police officers and kids will face off in a water balloon toss at 6 p.m.
  • The HF High School Orchestra — raising money for its spring trip to Cuba — will be hosting a jump house for donations from 6 to 8 p.m.
  • DJ Christopher Calip will play summer hits from 6 to 8 p.m.
  • There will be an ice cream-eating contest at 7 p.m. sponsored by Homewood Dairy Queen.

“National Night Out brings law enforcement and the community together to build a trusting relationship, strengthens our neighborhoods and to meet the men and women that keep Homewood ‘Home Sweet Homewood,’” said Curt Wiest, crime prevention officer.

Refreshments will be served by Wiley’s Grill, Aurelio’s Pizza and Dairy Queen.
Local organizations will be available at National Night Out to discuss programs within community.

  • School District 153’s Snowflake and Snow flurry, drug and alcohol prevention programs for grades 5 through 8
  • E-Com
  • South Suburban Family Shelter
  • DARE: A K-12 education program taught in schools in America and 52 other countries. DARE addresses drugs, violence, bullying, internet safety and other high risk circumstances.
  • Homewood detectives
  • Homewood Science Center
  • Target will be raffling backpacks and supplies to participants
  • Peer Jury
  • Homewood’s Community Relations Committee
