Homewood to consider joining new regional water agency

On Tuesday, Homewood trustees will consider joining a new group of 11 south suburban municipalities that plan to explore the feasibility of obtaining water from Lake Michigan through Hammond, Ind.

Flossmoor trustees voted in December to join the group.

Public Works Director John Schaefer said the exploratory project does not necessarily indicate a plan to switch water suppliers. He said the village is interested in having more control over water costs and it hopes to determine what its options are.

Rates charged by Chicago have gone up significantly in recent years, he said. Homewood receives Lake Michigan water from Chicago through Harvey.

"We owe it to the citizens to determine if it's viable," he said.

Mayor Richard Hofeld said the ultimate goal remains the same, which is to "provide the community with a safe and reliable source of water" and the study will help the village pursue that goal.

Trustees will consider another intergovernmental agreement, this one to join the Illinois Public Works Mutual Aid Network. The village currently belongs to the smaller Northeastern Illinois Mutual Aid Network.

Also on the agenda:
  • A request from Rabid Brewing for a brew pub liquor license.
  • The oath of office to Police Officer Eric Bujak.
  • Award a bid for winter tree trimming.
  • A budget amendment to cover $47,000 of the Lyn Court water main replacement project.
  • A lobbying services agreement.
  • An amendment to the village ordinance concerning registration and bonding of contractors.

The Board of Trustees meets at 7:30 p.m. in Village Hall, 2020 Chestnut Road.
