Area police search for suspect in fatal shooting of CN guard

Multiple police agencies were searching the area Saturday night for a suspect in the fatal shooting of a CN Railway security guard in Harvey.

The incident began about 7 p.m. when the suspect allegedly stole a vehicle. The victim contacted Harvey police and in another car pursued the stolen vehicle, according to news conference video posted on an ABC7 News Facebook page.

Harvey police spokesman Sean Howard said the suspect crashed the stolen vehicle into the viaduct at 159th Street and Park Avenue, ran onto the tracks and encountered the CN security guard.

The guard was shot and later died at South Suburban Hospital, Howard said.

The suspect then stole a railway vehicle, which he later abandoned near 171st Street and Park Avenue in East Hazel Crest.

Howard said the suspect was wearing a black sweatshirt and blue jeans.

He urged anyone in Hazel Crest, East Hazel Crest and Markham to be on alert and to call 911 to report any suspicious activity.

“The suspect is armed and considered very dangerous,” Howard said.

Metra suspended stops at 147th, Harvey, Hazel Crest, and Calumet stations for several hours Saturday night while the incident unfolded.
